April 2003 - Harlan Bakeries wins the Snack Food & Wholesale Bakery Magazine
award of INTERMEDIATE WHOLESALE BAKER OF THE YEAR.
Avon, Indiana - Harlan
Bakeries, Inc. was extremely honored when selected as
INTERMEDIATE WHOLESALE BAKER OF THE YEAR,
by Stagnito Communications Incorporated, an MWC Company
who publishes Snack Food & Wholesale Bakery Magazine.
This honor was recognized in their cover story for the April 2003 magazine publication.
The feature article was titled, "Architects for Growth" and was written by Dan Malovany.
He stated, "Since 1997, Harlan Bakeries sales have more than quintupled from under $20 million
to well over $100 million through expanding its core bagel business, making strategic acquisitions
and diversifying with new products into new markets and new channels." Malovany states, "Much of
Harlan Bakeries' growth can be attributed to giving customers exactly what they want. While the company
appreciates the art of baking, its strength lies in the science of baking."
Hugh P. Harlan, owner, states, "Yes, we are bakers, but we also look at ourselves as food
processors. We're really focused on statistical process controls (SPC's)."
In addition to the cover story, Harlan Bakeries was also featured in the Editor's note for its
30/40 Vision. Harlan's 30/40 plan is for production employees. It is an innovative pay program that allows the
production facility to run four, 6-hour shifts instead of three, 8-hour shifts per day.
The employees must follow the good manufacturing practices and the other production rules of the facility, by
doing this; they work 30 hours each week and receive pay for 40 hours.
Harlan Bakeries is proud to receive the distinguished honor of being named the INTERMEDIATE
WHOLESALE BAKER OF THE YEAR, and looks forward to continued growth, new products and the joy of working hard to reach the next level.
