April 2003 - Harlan
Bakeries participates in the Retailer’s Bakery
Association (RBA) Marketplace 2003 Show.
Anaheim Convention Center,
Anaheim, California - In his welcoming note,
Larry Merritt, CMB of Merritt’s Bakery and President
of the RBA, stated, “Everything great starts with
someone’s dream, an idea something new, revolutionary,
something different – it all starts with that
little seed of thought called someone’s dream.
It may be silly, it may be impractical, it may be outrageous,
but it is someone’s dream. It takes real courage
to follow your dreams. And I love dreamers.”
We are sure Mr. Merritt would love
the Harlan brothers and their bakery. In the last 12
years, Harlan Bakeries has grown from a very small storefront
operation to over a 100 million dollar business. It
has been the dream of Hugh and Doug Harlan, brothers
who own the bakery, to grow a large dream and dream
they have. Harlan Bakeries started at the right time
with the bagel business. In the last several years,
they have added many products to their bakery line,
including fruit pies, crème pies, meringue pies,
and several varieties of cakes, cookies and muffins.
The dreams continue to grow and so does Harlan Bakeries.
Harlan Bakeries was proud to have
a booth at the Marketplace Show. It was great to spend
some time renewing old friendships and meeting with
current customers and marketing to potential new customers.
The Marketplace Show was the perfect
place to let the west know about our recent acquisition
of A.C.E. Baking Company in Denver. In addition, we
were able to introduce our new salesman for the West
coast, Gary Coyle. Gary has been in the food sales business
for many years and we are pleased to have him join the
Harlan team.
Harlan Bakeries, Inc., established
in 1991, produces Harlan Bigger Better Bagels and Harlan
Giant Gourmet Bagels brands, private-label bagels, contract

now produces more than just bagels. Harlan Bakeries
operates four production facilities. This includes its
200,000+ square foot flagship facility and corporate
