AVON, INDIANA –Harlan Bakeries, Inc. is honored to accept the title of Wholesale Baker of the Year for 2006. Harlan was previously named the Intermediate Wholesale Baker of the Year in 2003, and is the first company to be awarded both honors. The September 2006 issue of Snack Food & Wholesale Bakery magazine feartures three articles about Harlan which profile various aspects of the business.

For more than 15 years, Harlan has fostered strategic and sustainable growth through innovative systems, technologies
and products, and strategic acquisitions. Acquisitions include the purchase of Kyger Bakery Products in 2001 and Ace Baking Company (now Harlan Bakeries - Colorado, LLC) in 2002, along with the recent purchase of Meyer's Bakeries in 2005 by the Harlan subsidiary Southern Bakeries, LLC. Additional characteristics that make Harlan highly successful include highly efficient production, flexibility and speed to market for new products.

"We're very flexible in developing processes and systems," said Doug Harlan, Executive Vice President and co-owner of Harlan Bakeries, Inc. "As everybody knows, things change very quickly in this industry, so being flexible is a strength in this market."

In the first of three feature articles, Running Down a Dream, Snack Food & Wholesale Bakery Editor Dan Malovany further explains the strategies that have made Harlan Bakeries, Inc. a national leader in wholesale baking.

"Through strategic acquisitions and internal growth since 2000, Harlan Bakeries has transformed itself from a specialty bagel producer into a major, diversified wholesale baking operation with a full ine of products ragning from frozen breads, pies, cakes and other desserts to frozen muffins, cookie dough and, yes, bagels for its contract manufacturer customers, hundreds of in-store bakeries and thousands of national foodservice operations."

The two additional cover staries: Hitting the Sweet Spot and Bagels by the Millions detail Harlan's growth into the sweet goods sector and outline the innovative techniques the bakery employes to manage its enormous bagel production operations.
